Hamilton Big Idea #1

Emerging ideas and ideologies profoundly influence societies and events.

“Will they know what you overcame?

Will they know you rewrote your game?

The world will never be the same,oh.”

These lines represent the main idea of how Hamilton influenced America. He had to overcome obstacles and “rewrite” America forever, like nothing before. It is indeed rare for an immigrant to¬†one of the Founding Fathers of the United States.

Disparities in power alter the balanced of relationships between individuals and between societies.

“And every day the salves were being slaughtered and carted away…The brother was ready to beg, steal, or barter.”

This passage shows how Hamilton grew up in a community affected by poverty. People won’t go “beg, steal, borrow or barter” if it is a better community. It is very hard for Hamilton to get the education he deserved at that time.

Collective identity is constructed and can change over time.

“How does a bastard, orphan, son of a whore

And a Scotsman, dropped in the middle of a forgotten spot in the Caribbean by providence impoverished,

In squalor, grow up to be a hero and a scholar?”

Hamilton was born with an identity that most people would look down to. In other words, he was born with nothing special but he managed to overthrow his identity and gain a reputation for his literature. His identity is changed over time as he transferred from a kid to a hero.

The physical environment influences the nature of political, social, and economic change.

“Well, the word got around, they said, this kid is insane, man

Took up a collection just to send him to the mainland

Get your education, don’t forget from whence you came.”

the passage shows how Hamilton is transferred to a new environment, which is New York. The new environment helped him to achieve his goals more efficiently because back in the Caribbean, he has absolutely no opportunities to achieve anything.
